ABSTRACT

In 1993, Congress held hearings related to several bills that were working their way through the House and Senate. Among these was an October 1993 hearing of the Subcommittee on Labor and Human Resources. One of the most important witnesses at this hearing was the Commissioner of the FDA at the time, Dr. David Kessler. And one of the most notable members of the Subcommittee was Senator Orin Hatch (R-Utah), a strong supporter of the dietary supplement industry and a principle sponsor of a Senate bill that ws intended to radically alter the regulation of dietary supplements in the U.S.. In this chapter, I have included excerpts from the transcripts of this hearing.
