ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the system of engagement with a system diagram and explains the two causal loop diagrams (CLD), the engagement loop and the disengagement loop. It describes the various system elements, the dynamics and interactions involved as well as the counterintuitive nature of system’s behaviors. This counterintuitive nature frequently confuses managers and causes them to not act in their best interests, even if they are well-intended. The chapter looks at the specifics of the engagement and disengagement loops and their intricacies. It examines the “positivity–negativity” dynamic. The chapter explores the complex role of communications and the power and the critical importance of the cultural network as a change mechanism. It analyses the power of the cultural network and its important role in creating engagement. All systems deteriorate, and the engagement system is no exception. In the system to create engagement, the engagement circle is a “reinforcing loop” designed to “Spread the Positive Word” and create more Loyalists.
