ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the role that mental models have in shaping management behavior and, hence, in shaping the culture. It discusses the evolution of management styles and what has caused those changes. The predominant belief in Management 1.0 is that the only thing that matters, is the results, the bottom line results. The predominant belief in Management 2.0 is that the right process will create the right result. The chapter explores Management 3.0 and why it contains the key elements that are needed to create a fully engaged workforce. The essence of strong, effective – or weak, ineffective – management largely flows from the belief systems the managers hold. And by no small margin, the managers at the top of the management pyramid are far and away the most influential. In the specific case of a management system, its purpose is the execution of the company’s Mission, Vision and Value System.
