ABSTRACT

The concluding chapter reprises the main empirical and theoretical findings of this study, going on to suggest three avenues for further research. The first task will be to continue to observe the wider movement playing out behind many of the Catholic campaigns analyzed here. How does an institution transform itself when the climate is one of secularization? How in future will the linkages between the triptych of religion, culture and identity be formed? The second avenue for research concerns the matrix dimension of territorial Catholicism. How can one assess properly, and without indulging in culturalism, the non-religious effects of a Catholic territorial matrix? The third avenue for research concerns the fundamental issue of the relations between the Catholic Church, the State and society, in the context of the neoliberalization of Southern European public spheres.
