ABSTRACT

Physical and mental suffering is widely spread throughout most organizations, professions, age groups, and organizational levels. Suffering can have many causes or forms ranging from anxiety to fright, depression, stress, and burnout. In this chapter we focus on some of the positive aspects that can come with suffering. We explore how the right level of stress can activate a neurochemical cocktail which creates a sense of contentment and serenity or a worker’s high. We show how physical suffering can be used as a means to disconnect, to train willpower to develop mental stamina and fortitude. This greater self-control positively influences decision-making processes at the workplace and in personal lives. We explore how suffering can help developing greater self-awareness and strengthen resilience.
