ABSTRACT

In this last themed chapter we focus on speed and lightness – two topics which have received very limited attention by management and organization scholars. In reference to the notion of lean management we start our discussion with lightness as a physical concept and from an operational perspective. We explore lightness as an organizational state of mind and as a mental state at an individual level. At both levels greater states of lightness allow for greater flexibility and patience, for making unconventional decisions, and for going nonconforming ways. We also address physical lightness – the stripping down of one’s material goods and belongings. In reference to the concept of minimalism we explore how physical lightness helps us to better understand what matters and is essential in life. We conclude our discussion by proposing that freeing oneself from having can help to becoming lighter and faster.
