ABSTRACT

The Kvarken region is characterised by a quite intensive transborder co-operation resulting in the close integration of areas on both sides of the border. The region comprises the county of Vasa in Finland and the county of Vasterbotten in Sweden. The Kvarken region possesses a very differentiated geographical structure and includes sparsely populated mountain areas as well as the fairly densely populated areas on the coast. The aim of the Kvarken Council is to facilitate co-operation among local authorities, private companies, public authorities and civic associations. The Kvarken Council has an executive board. Of the six board members, three are selected from each country. In telecommunications development has been rapid due to the deregulation in Finland and Sweden. The Kvarken Council has also contributed to negotiations resulting in an advantageous border rate for calls from the county of Vasa to the northern part of Sweden. The Kvarken Council has been engaged in cultural projects since it was founded.
