ABSTRACT

Certain things need to be articulated at a level above the usual language of our time. In studying the work of Christos Yannaras, it is necessary to talk about the spiritual ecclesiastical tradition that is connected with the Greek language, but also with what distorts and marginalizes this tradition. Through the concept of what Christos Yannaras calls the ‘Ecclesiastical Event’ this chapter discusses the state and the history of modern Greece, and attempts a synthetic description of its relationship with the wider world. In addition, the chapter refers to the different ‘way of being’ that Yannaras often talks about, which is grounded in a centuries’ old tradition, mostly ancient Greek and Christian, which has also taken some characteristics from Western European culture.
