ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 focuses on Elmalılı’s biography and his intellectual formation, which situates the details of his life and thought in the historical context of the late Ottoman Empire and the early years of the republic. This chapter shows how engaged Elmalılı was in the most significant debates taking place around him and describes his involvement in key religious, educational, and political institutions. A goal of this chapter is to contextualize Elmalılı’s activity and thought within the events and intellectual currents of the period.
