ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author looks at human and animal movement and show its basic shapes, the various shapes it is composed of as a whole and individually. One of the benefits quick sketching has given his is that it has sharpened his ability to analyze actions quickly. Another benefit of quick sketching is “thumbnailing.” For the author thumbnailing is an offshoot of his quick sketching technique, only executed in a smaller format. One of the author goals in quick sketching is to put the most information about the subject with the fewest number of lines, in the shortest amount of time. In the sketches the silhouette value is there but the underlying structure is weak. The author encouraged the students in his class to quick sketch to supplement their time in class and to help them sharpen their observation skills by identifying key actions in movement and the ability to create a true likeness of what they saw.
