ABSTRACT

The choreographed movements of a single skater come with a degree of difficulty. Multiplying that by two will reveal what the quick sketcher is confronted with in pairs skating. Negative shapes around the body give as much information as the sketch of the body. Attention to positive and negative shapes will help artists maintain control over their sketch. The feel of moving forward requires the sketch to have more open negative space in front and less negative space in the back. The hoodie and jacket inform the sketcher which direction the skier came from. Seasonal sports offer the opportunity to sketch athletes performing routines in a speeded up mode. Whether fighting for balance, about to fall or take flight, the sketcher must be on alert to capture the action. Knowledge of balance enables the quick sketcher to anticipate actions to come. Body lean tells of speed or the lack thereof in the story told in line.
