ABSTRACT

The United Church of Christ was formed in 1957 with the union of the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church. Each of these was the result of an earlier union of two denominations: The General Council of the Congregational and Christian Churches was formed in 1931 by the union of the National Council of the Congregational Churches and the General Convention of the Christian Church; the Evangelical and Reformed Church was formed in 1934 with the merger of the Reformed Church in the United States and the Evangelical Synod of North America.
