ABSTRACT

This chapter views as a continuation of the task of unpacking the ambiguity of the word ‘meaning’ as it pertains to Moore’s philosophy, except that this time we will be concentrating on the different theories or species of meaning which can be subsumed under the heading of technical meaning or what for Moore is the same thing, analysis. Thus, with the introduction of relevant counterfactual conditions into the reductional analysis of material object propositions into sense-datum propositions, the mind independence of material objects is preserved. The introduction of sense-data marks a place where Moore’s methods of appealing to common sense, ordinary language, and philosophical analysis intersect. One type of analysis in which distinction figures of necessity is that type which may be called ‘comparative analysis’. Comparative analysis reveals similarities and differences not ordinarily noticed in everyday life even though its staring point is usually common sense and ordinary language.
