ABSTRACT

Consumer rights in terms of food safety and food security should be non-negotiable and non-discriminatory. It must be recalled that persons with disabilities constitute more than 1 billion of the world’s population, based on World Bank statistics, and the increasing population of persons with disabilities has impacted trends of food production for some time. The transformation of disability from a medical- to a social rights-based model has made international organizations and organs of the United Nations recognize the relevance of including persons with disabilities in consultation forums discussing a wide range of matters. Although in some cases there are links between disabilities and obesity, there is room for ameliorating the cause and effect and ensuring food security. With regard to promoting the rights of owning land and rights over land without disability-based discrimination, the idea of promoting and protecting the rights of land ownership could be embodied within the concept of ensuring equal property ownership.
