ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews work disability policies in China, including policies on the employment of people with disabilities, work-related disability compensation, and non-work-related injury and disease benefits. Since 1978, these policies have been reformed in the context of China’s transition from a planned to a socialist market economy. Many workers, in particular those in flexible employment, are not fully protected by these reforms. In addition, employers’ obligations are mainly restricted to financial liabilities rather than providing jobs for workers with disabilities, which may not promote their sustainable employment.
