ABSTRACT

Migration to the Netherlands from Suriname began gradually in the 1960s. In 1975, when Suriname attained freedom from the Netherlands there was a near-exodus have forayed into almost all professions and are making their mark in each of them. The razzamatazz of material affluence, luxury, comfort had awed and dazzled the Hindustanis when they arrived in the Netherlands. The Hindustanis in the Netherlands clung on to their cultural inheritance. The same clothing, diet and etiquettes and pictures of gods and goddesses that had been stuck on the walls of their houses in Suriname, continued to be followed in their new destination. Migration to the Netherlands was a forward leap, socioeconomically, for the Hindustani women. They were enjoying the material comforts and luxuries that they did not have access to in Suriname. The constant need to forcefully assert and exhibit their culture in the Netherlands arose from the new-found affluence and prosperity that the women tasted in this land.
