ABSTRACT

This programme offers the opportunity for school staff to work collaboratively with parents in order to ensure consistency of approach and thus greater success for the children taking part in this learning journey. Active parental engagement builds trusting relationships between the main stakeholders in a child’s education, and as such requires that parents are engaged in this process from the beginning. Putting in place a variety of initiatives to involve parents enables joint decision-making when exploring the best way to support the children taking part. Of paramount importance when implementing this programme is to consider every family’s starting point, as well as be aware of the accessibility issues that may arise for children with special needs. Specific strategies and adaptations thus need to be in place to ensure that all children with additional needs that take part are fully supported to allow them to take full advantage of what each activity has to offer to contribute to their successful development.
