ABSTRACT

One of the most important skills that children need to develop is emotional intelligence, which includes becoming aware of their feelings and how these manifest themselves, understanding what causes them to feel a certain way, and knowing how to manage their negative emotions appropriately. Fostering emotional resilience at an early age will enable young children to begin to understand how emotions can influence their lives, which affects their self-awareness, their relationships, and their emotional wellbeing. The core area of emotions within this programme therefore focuses on helping young children to recognise feelings of happiness and sadness in themselves and others, and why they may feel these emotions. It also enables children to reflect on anger and how to make themselves and others feel better when they are feeling angry. Helping children to begin to focus on emotions and their experiences of different feelings allows them to begin to develop skills that will support their happiness and their ability to cope.
