ABSTRACT

The ability to be self-aware is a foundation skill that children need to develop in order to understand themselves as individuals who contribute to the world around them, as well as becoming more aware of others. The psychological and neurobiological triggers for self-awareness occur around three years of age, which then continue to progress over time to support the development of children’s self-regulation and reflection skills, and their understanding of the world and their place within it. The sessions on building awareness within this programme therefore focus on enabling young children to develop early skills needed for self-awareness such as being able to think about themselves in terms of what they look like, what they like and dislike, and the similarities between themselves and others. This also includes their ability to reflect on their strengths and what makes them special, their ability to make choices, as well as recognising the impact that their choices can have on others around them.
