ABSTRACT

It is important to highlight that children can demonstrate that they are ready for school by doing well in tasks that test them, but it does not mean that they are ready for learning. Readiness for learning includes the ability to follow instructions, to sit and listen, work alongside and collaboratively with peers, and cope with the demands of work. It also involves children recognising what they are good at and using this to help them, to be able to ask for help when this is needed, and persevere when things get hard, which includes acknowledging that making mistakes is an essential part of learning. These elements are covered in the sessions within this book dedicated to focusing on developing skills for learning, but are also an integral part of the whole programme as the ability to focus and concentrate, to listen to others, work in groups, and express themselves, is incorporated into how every session and activity is structured.
