ABSTRACT

An important aspect of a manager’s role is what might be termed domestic management. Domestic management forms the basis for the practice of social care in residential and day care settings. A prerequisite of social care management is to ensure that the practicalities of domestic management are carried out. There must be efficient systems for the provision of food, heat and light, cleanliness, repairs and maintenance, in order for the establishment to function at an adequate level. More recently the introduction of the concept of the resource centre has placed additional pressure on establishments to respond to different service requirements. This brief consideration of the management of internal resources in the spheres of both domestic management and the building begins to challenge the assumption that this aspect of social care is unimportant and shows how the manager’s role has developed in this area of work.
