ABSTRACT

Humans everywhere are fundamentally afraid for their existence. This chapter is about the power of fear and hope and the necessity of the latter in the face of the former. Politics is passionate and values driven because we humans who make our social world are those things and more. Donald Trump’s statements about power conceive of power as rooted in fear, namely the fear that someone might hurt us. For President Trump, fear works. In strategic action, one wants to get the other to do what you want them to do. Game theory can be used to understand this competitive realm. If one believes all the evidence, humans cannot continue business as usual. Communitas may not develop. Instead, confusion and fear can take over.
