ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the main principles of constructivism and how they relate to people are presented. These ideas include the notions of biology, autopoiesis, and perturbations. The information is presented as it relates to a hypothetical case of an interracial couple who are coming to therapy because of anxiety, racism, and sexual issues. The chapter presents constructivist ideas, that is, that people are self-referential and create their own meanings. The notion of absolute truth is explored as is how second order cybernetics allows people to view individuals as meaning generating organisms.
