ABSTRACT

This chapter is an account of an experimental course conducted in three versions during the period 1968-70. On the first occasion it was used in a summer school in an American University in 1968: the 'contact time' was one hour twenty minutes each day for twenty-seven days. The second occasion was at Bede College, Durham, a Church of England college of education, where it was used in the autumn term of 1969 with a group of 25 first-year students on a time allowance of 1½ hours a week for ten weeks. On the third occasion it was used with a third-year group of students at Bede College in the ten-week period January — March, 1970. 'Syndicate' pattern of organization has an important bearing on several aspects of moral development. One can observe them developing their powers of deliberation and exploration in dealing with complex issues and strengthening their capacity for joint thinking and judgment.
