ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that how far student services can help to provide a suitable environment in which students can develop and achieve a satisfactory life style. It presents the examples from the North East London Polytechnic where the author is Dean of Students. The provision of student services suggests that the polytechnic is a caring community. When the Welfare Officer went to see him at his lodgings the student expressed first surprise, then gratitude and pleasure that the Polytechnic cared sufficiently to want to know what had happened to him. Administrative procedures can be influenced by welfare considerations which have been highlighted by the Student Services. It is difficult to assess accurately the influence of Student Services in the development of students. Many of the developments concerning Student Services would be nullified if the student body in the Polytechnic was either indifferent or antagonistic to them.
