ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a brief overview of leadership and the structure of the report. It shows that leadership needs to be viewed in two alternate modes, transactional and transformational. The book explores developments in public administration. It outlines the structure underpinning the surveys and reports on the findings of 11 demographic characteristics of leaders in the Australian Public Service (APS). It explores the impact of the culture of the APS, interpreted as the key attitudes and ways of working and the values held by senior executive service and senior officers, against measures of organizational performance and the effectiveness of information technology application in the organization. The book provides recommendations for enhancing leadership performance within the APS. It examines the impact of the Centre on regional/outlying offices.
