ABSTRACT

In Copenhagen, cycling policy is parking policy. Street parking for cars takes up valuable city space and also hinders the expansion of Copenhagen’s cycle track system. Off-street car parking generates more car trips, traffic, and pre-empts other uses such as housing. The politics of parking involves the location and cost of public curbside parking, neighborhood parking permit zones, and urban planning for off-street parking in new development. Copenhagen’s Left/Progressives support policies that reduce the amount of car parking in Copenhagen. The Neoliberals and Right/Conservatives want more parking in Copenhagen, even if it impedes improvements for cycling or transit.
