ABSTRACT

The rapid growth of the wireless technology and availability of low-cost mul-timedia hardware devices, i.e. sensor nodes have mainly influenced the transformation of the traditional Wireless Sensor Network to its Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network version. Image processing is one of the most important applications in WMSN. Limited bandwidth, computa-tional power, storage capability, and battery constraints of the sensor nodes are some of the main challenges in the design and implementation of image transmission in WMSNs. In this paper, we propose an energy aware image coding scheme for wireless multimedia sensor network. This technique combines SPIHT coding with Haar wavelet transform and Run Length Encoding to further compress the amount of data transmitted over the network to minimize the energy expen-diture of nodes in particular and the network in general. Moreover, this technique enables huge reduction in computation energy as well as communication energy needed with minimal degra-dation of image quality. The simulation experiment was carried out in MATLAB. The proposed system out performs the existing traditional SPIHT algorithm with better compression ratio and image quality. Furthermore, it enhances the life time of network.
