ABSTRACT

Emerging applications such as IoT, Big Data, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Automation are imposing higher performance and efficiency requirements on the hardware. On the device level, these requirements can be addressed by exploring novel semiconductor materials and device architectures. In particular, device technologies which fall under the Beyond CMOS category are expected to fulfill the expectations of the new era of electronics and computing. These devices have the benefit of enhancing functionality without the need for aggressive downscaling generally associated with conventional CMOS devices. In this paper, we present how Beyond CMOS devices can be used in emerging application areas such as hardware security and cryogenic electronics. Major future challenges and current viability is also addressed.
