ABSTRACT

A fascinating confrontation then takes place between them behind closed doors: “Anyone bold enough to open stealthily would have been treated to the uncanny sight of a double captain busy talking in whispers with his other self”. The captain and his “secret sharer”, accomplices in spite of themselves, then concoct a highly risky plan for him to flee the ship and swim to safety: the captain orders the ship to deviate from its course and to sail close to the shore. Each of them trusts in his own capacities to achieve an extremely uncertain goal. Patient and analyst are faced with a situation from which apparently there is no way out, but the fact of putting up with it together brings other capacities into play. The patient’s father learned that his entire family had been deported and wiped out; in Stuttgart, he met an old friend of his - she too was the only surviving member of her family.
