ABSTRACT

The annihilation of psychic pain, the reentry into the water, mental death, the blunting or abolition of feeling when struck by Lethe forgetfulness, mental drugging, anesthesia, loss of steering as a result of the rudder breaking away, and death as a way of avoiding the need for helping hands, and an attitude of heroic omnipotence. Even what the recent generations have described as “cool” represent the numbing of feelings and steering. The qualitative problem includes the pain they feel and the difficulty of their object relations, but the solution is to get more and more and more of something quantitative that can be counted, like money or objects that are inorganic. The analysand must become able to hold in mind and compare what the analyst states by interpretation the analysand thinks or feels with that which the analysand knows he thinks or feels.
