ABSTRACT

Chapter 1, “Creating a Literacy Community,” describes the school and classroom context for the Girls Writing Science project. We describe the political and educational context for the study as well as the students, classroom teachers, and researchers. This chapter provides a logistical overview of what we did to make this project possible. We also describe our data collection, which included pre- and post-questionnaires, interviews, writing samples, and self-efficacy surveys. We also describe the writing curriculum design and instruction for the project.
