ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the evolution of Korean university evaluation and accreditation. Its development from 1945 is analysed, with special emphasis on the organization, procedures and criteria of the accreditation system. In preparation for the twenty-first century, the main aim in Korean higher education has been to develop overall excellence in education to complement the massive quantitative expansion that has already taken place. The modern education system in Korea was established largely under American influence after the Second World War and that is why Korean education resembles the American system and is very much influenced by it. In spite of the Korean War from 1950 to 1953, higher education continued to expand, but no formal university evaluation system was introduced. After the establishment of the Sixth Republic, Korean society democratized more rapidly. In the United States, the main goal of accreditation is to ensure a minimum quality of education.
