ABSTRACT

The complaint that economics has an affinity closer to religion than to science is not an implied criticism of religion. The objection is to the way that religion is commonly practised and to doctrinaire attitudes which owe more to human vanity than to divine inspiration. The doctrine of Papal Infallibility is not, however, peculiar to Roman Catholicism; it seems to contaminate the practice of all religions and that includes economics. Religions based on belief in God are responsible for some of the most tragic episodes of human history all because of breach of the third commandment. Religions based on man, like those of Hitler and Stalin, are infinitely worse; for there is no third commandment at all. It is not the religion which is to blame but those who use it to further their own ends who take name of their God in vain and bear false witness against their opponents.
