ABSTRACT

Just the Job was originally a pilot project in South West England, which aimed to investigate the contribution which television, printed materials, and a voluntary counselling network could make in assisting unemployed school leavers to make decisions about their futures. The Just the Job project has been significant in the area of social action broadcasting for two reasons: firstly, because of its impact upon the youth unemployment situation in the South West of England and secondly, because of its practical relevance in showing how the broadcasting media can cooperate with other agencies in trying to alleviate an identified social problem. The Just the Job series was classified by Westward TV as ‘adult education’ output. This classification means programmes are destined for the less popular transmission times e.g. Sunday mornings. The major area of disagreement among the piloting groups was in appreciation of language and the use of cartoons.
