ABSTRACT

Designing material in the order of the presentation of the syllabus may be acceptable on some occasions, but remember the goal is to produce a high quality learning experience not to define a syllabus. A display of computer-based learning consists of a variety of elements: location and navigation information, controls, tutorial information, and assessment. The positions of tutorial, assessment and feedback on the screen need to be defined so that learners know the purpose of anything which appears in particular areas, thus avoiding confusion and to some extent reinforcing the information. Frames are displays of single screens. Screen layout is influenced by two key factors: the grouping or chunking of information, and the complexity of the overall display. It is preferable to avoid designing complex and over-dense displays in the first place. An effective method of limiting complexity is to focus on a learning objective in each display.
