ABSTRACT

Evaluation can take a variety of forms but is mainly concerned with improving the quality of the computer-based learning material. Formative evaluation is undertaken during the development process to ensure that the work benefits from feedback from the users and other experts. Learners' evaluation is vital and should be integrated into all steps of the development. It is therefore useful to ask learners what they think about initial design ideas or even to involve them in brainstorming sessions to identify possible approaches. Evaluation is often based on analysing the evidence provided by groups of learners and other stakeholders in the development. The evaluation needs to compare the characteristics of the sample with whole groups of learners. A key element in summative evaluation is to judge the cost effectiveness of the development. This is not simply about calculating the costs but about comparing the benefits of the computer-based learning materials with a another approach to solving the same learning need.
