ABSTRACT

In recent years we can observe a significant grow of interest in the field of implementation of wearable electronics into the personal protective equipment to improve workers’ safety, health, and comfort. This trend especially concerns firefighters’ equipment due to extremely hazardous, demanding, and multi-risk environment in which they have to perform their rescue operations. Therefore, analysis of the state-of-the-art advancements in the field of smart firefighting clothing is presented in the chapter. Sensors for health state monitoring, as well as environmental parameters and location, are included within the analysis. Moreover, the most frequently used communication technologies and standards are presented. Finally, examples of Wireless Body Area Sensor Network within smart firefighting clothing as a result of the European projects are described. On a basis of the performed analysis, main challenges for further work to increase a common use of such smart clothing are indicated.
