ABSTRACT

Although a role for mechanotransduction is well-defined in many different aspects of human physiology, the impact of mechanical signaling specifically within the reproductive tract has not been extensively characterized. However, many contemporary research advances in reproductive mechanobiology have contributed to our understanding of this rapidly progressing field. This chapter will highlight choice examples of the more dramatic instances where mechanobiology plays a pivotal role in the function in the reproductive tract—from ovulation to fertilization and parturition. In addition to these exceptional examples are many occurrences in which mechanotransduction is critical in the continuing maintenance of healthy tissue homeostasis within numerous organs, including the ovary, uterus, and breast. After discussion of these examples, we will look to the development of “mechano-fluent” technologies, which are used to better maintain reproductive health. Together, these examples highlight the pivotal role of mechanotransduction within the healthy reproductive tract.
