ABSTRACT

Sustainability has become a key trend within the sphere of tourism and event management and this book presents an overview of the context of sustainability within these two significant and interconnected industries. The book looks at key frameworks, guidelines, principles and benchmarks that support the application of sustainability in practice. In recent years there have been a number of achievements in applying sustainability principles into the management of destinations, attractions, venues and events and this chapter outlines the structure of the book which has the overarching aim of showcasing some key examples from around the world. The five sections of the book cover themes of governance, accreditation, certification, innovation, priorities, trends, ambitions and consumer behaviour. This book includes specific examples of best practice in the organisation of music and arts festivals, special interest tourism, the green management of outdoor sites and the management of sports events. A variety of case studies are presented from different destinations: the UK, Romania, Spain, Germany (representing Europe); Denmark (Scandinavia); Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the USA (the Americas); Australia and Fiji (the Indian Ocean).
