ABSTRACT

It should come as no surprise, having read any Borges story, that the concept of a labyrinth is a favorite symbol for this most playful of authors. The density of his stories have a deep affinity with the maze-like complexity that both literature and reality can elicit. It is more than understandable that a reader might easily get lost between the tale’s already twisting narrative and its tangle of potential meanings. Such a result is only compounded when one adds the gloss of a commentator; who, even with the best of intentions, often ends up adding to the maze, as opposed to elucidating the path toward liberation or understanding. It is this vestigial fear that leads to this last chapter, whose goal is to retrieve any reader that might still feel lost in the inadvertent labyrinth of Part I of this book. In this spirit, let us review Borges’ essential clues so that we can create a kind a thread to lead us out of this labyrinth of potential meanings and toward a clearer understanding of the “what of theater.”
