ABSTRACT

In this chapter I shall consider two nascent dictionary projects of which I have some knowledge. These are the de St Croix Fulfulde-English Dictionary in Kano, Nigeria, and the Paris-based General Dictionary of Fulfulde. I shall then go on to discuss the problem of grammatical categories for dictionary headwords. This is one of the main issues that arise in the 1979 report on the Paris-based dictionary, edited by the Comité Scientifique International, which I shall henceforth refer to as ‘the 1979 report’.
