ABSTRACT
In the military training and education communities, data analytics methods have begun to make an impact on the way that courses are designed, run, and evaluated. Data analytics is a scientific process of transforming data into insight for making better decisions. This chapter summarizes the fields of learning analytics and educational data mining that are relevant to military learning systems. It explains a framework to evaluate data analytics techniques for military learning systems and explores it in three use cases: content development, real-time analysis, and post-evaluation. Real-time analysis is attractive to improve learning effectiveness, but interpretation of the analysis needs requires caution. Expanding on the real-time analysis use case, the chapter identifies several applicable data analytics techniques in terms of their application to learning analytics. Each of these techniques and applications serve as examples of the potential value of data analytics to support Army learning.
