ABSTRACT

In the twenty four years since it opened in October 1973 the Modern Records Centre of the University of Warwick Library has developed into a major national and international archive resource, with holdings in excess of 6km. During the first four years of its operation the Centre soon established that there was very real potential for a new specialist repository operating in its chosen fields. Trade unions in particular soon responded positively and in some number to the invitation to deposit their historical records, in return for making them available for research. By the time of publication of the Supplement to the Guide a number of other employers’/trade associations’ records had been deposited, including those of some predecessors of the British Clothing Industry Association. The CBI had been founded in 1965 by the coming together of the Federation of British Industries, the British Employers’ Confederation and the National Association of British Manufacturers.
