ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a reframing of Ethical Leadership from an experiential and phenomenological lens. Through this lens, the subtleties and complexities of the educational context 'as lived' show a relational uncertainty and the dynamic nature of Ethical Leaders' lived experiences. Ethical leadership is a moral activity that is grounded in the moral foundations of the leader. The phenomenological nature of Ethical Leadership is underpinned by phenomenological inquiries conducted within Chile, New Zealand and Australia. The notion of Ethical Leadership involves connecting with others as human beings and in a manner that is relational, purpose-driven and in their best interests. Morality, in turn, is seen as 'the acting out of ethical beliefs and commitments'. Morality is thus the part of ethics that is concerned with behaviours and practices. Ethical leaders are purpose driven, purpose-full and dream centred. Clarity of educational and humane purpose underpins their interactions with others.
