ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the fundamental operations for plantation and management of a chestnut orchard are described. Establishing chestnut orchards should be carried out with due consideration for many parameters such as soil, climate, rootstock, cultivar, pollinizer, cover crops, shelters, and agrotechnique. Weed control is fundamental, and pruning should be always balanced with fertilization, based on local site conditions, and irrigation, especially during orchard establishment. Chestnut trees typically bear their first crop 3 to 4 years after planting, and may be hand or mechanically harvested.
