ABSTRACT

Few institutions in the UK are fortunate enough to have accommodation originally designed for resource provision and retrieval. Possible forms of accommodation for production and retrieval services are illustrated in the plans of facilities at the Dundee College of Education which follow shortly. When the production of learning materials was in the second stage, it was quite feasible for a number of technicians to be working simultaneously on the elements for which each was responsible. The importance of the reliability of equipment in an educational setting has been stressed. Printing machinery is noisy: audio and television studios must have acoustic separation from the rumble of printing presses and the clatter of folding machines. The television distribution centre was thus constructed as an integral part of the library resource centre. The electrostatic plate-makers, which require no blackout provision, should be immediately adjacent to the printing machines, but a darkroom is required for the use of negative materials with a process camera.
