ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the design and application of a model for the interregional and multimodal distribution of goods in Europe. The model specification takes into account international barriers for trade and transport and regional access and egress resistances, both by mode of transport. The impact of the integration of national economies on international freight transport flows is one of the key issues in European transportation policy. The design of Trans-European and Pan-European infrastructural networks have to take into account the developments in freight transport demand, in particular where it will concern facilities dedicated to cross-border transport. The cost of transportation can be divided into the costs of transport over the main network, and the costs for access to or egress from this main network. Access and egress costs concern the mode and region-specific deterrent effect of the connections between local networks and the main transport axes.
