ABSTRACT

Most of the part-time students were teachers, with slightly more coming from further education than from the schools. As awards for full-time study are given to those with the better degrees, part-time graduate students may be expected to include many whose class of degree was relatively low. The student’s employment is related to the kind of qualification for which he is studying. Students’ reasons for graduate study were related to their subject and to the qualification for which they were studying. More of the part-time students wanted to cover up a poor first degree, though, as with the full-time students, there is likely to be some under-reporting. Among those part-time students who were studying specifically to improve their career prospects were a few people for whom this was a response to changes in the educational system. Relatively few part-time students study at the university at which they gained their first degrees.
