ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to explore the concept of ambiguous loss, how it may manifest for transgender (trans*) individuals during the process of transitioning, and to provide clinical recommendations for trans* individuals and families grappling with ambiguous loss. All significant life events, even those that are desirable and celebrated, can be accompanied with perceptions of gains and joy while simultaneously holding space for and experiencing a sense of loss. For trans* individuals, moving through the processes of coming out as trans* and transitioning ability to express congruently with one’s internal identity may be met with joy and excitement coupled with tangible and intangible losses. Through attending to manifestations of loss during transition, our intent is not to essentialize narratives of coming out and transitioning as loss or tragedy. Rather, we write in hopes of creating space for validating these experiences and avoiding further disenfranchisement.
